Starve the Children

Ampersand believes that Rauch has identified one of the major problems with the policy objections to same-sex marriage--namely the seeming indifference of opponents to how marriage would help gay people.  I agree.

I'm reminded of parents telling their kids to finish all the food on their plate because there are children starving in China.  Of course nothing the kid does with the food on his plate is going to affect the situation of Chinese children.  Still, the parents' warning serves a purpose in reminding the kids not to take the food for granted.  Perhaps the same thing could happen with marriage.  Straight couples should be reminded not to take their marriages for granted, as there are some couples who cannot get married.  To purposely withhold marriage for gay couples in order to make this point, though, is like purposely starving the Chinese children so kids will eat their food.
