Matt Yglesias has a must read article up at TAP on the accusations that John Kerry is opportunistic and inconsistent in his views. Yes, apparently Kerry supports lowering some taxes, and is opposed to lowering other taxes. If that's "nuance" who wouldn't want a candidate capable of nuance?
Mark Kleiman has a similar take when looking at Kerry's view on gay marriage. I strongly disagree with Kerry's support of an amendment in Massachusetts, but his position is not a waffle. My disagreement with Kerry is over whether civil unions can provide equal protection, but at least he agrees that equal protection is the goal. If indeed he supports a sort of federal civil union, this would take care of one of the concerns with civil unions. In any case, unlike Bush who said in 2000 the matter should be left to the states, Kerry has not flipped on the issue.
